H.L. Libby Corporation and its successor Libby and Libby Enterprises was founded by Harold Libby in the late 1970s. Mr. Libby utilizing his skills as a CPA and attorney began building his first shopping center in Youngstown, Ohio. Over the years the company carved out a niche finding underperforming properties and sometimes distressed assets. Over the years the company became a family enterprise with Robert and James Libby joining the company in 1989 and 1991, respectively. Utilizing the creativity and problem-solving capabilities of the team, the company developed a reputation for seeing value and potential in properties that others did not recognize. This combined with creativity and problem-solving characteristics of the team; Libby was able to capitalize on the relationships developed over the years with a variety of tenants to infuse life into vacant storefronts.
In 2005 Libby purchased the Boone Mall, and still owns the property to this day. The property purchased in 2005 does not resemble the property of today. The formula in Boone was no different than any other project. Find retailers that could satisfy an unmet need and provide them with a venue to succeed. Boone was par for the course. Tenants such as TJ Maxx, Home Goods, Hobby Lobby, ULTA, and Panera, have created another successful turnaround project for Libby to add to its portfolio. Though successful, the owners will always strive to make it better.
Like other properties purchased by the company, Libby takes a hands-on approach to ownership. Many times, you will see one of the owners in Boone meeting with tenants, inspecting the roof, or meeting with contractors. This personal, hands approach has always been at the core of its success for over 45 years.
